DENVER, CO (WSAU) – The Badgers trailed by 14 twice, before missing a game-tying shot at the buzzer in a 91-89 loss to BYU.
The defeat in the second round of the NCAA tournament ends Wisconsin’s basketball season. Thye Badgers finish the season at 27-10.
John Tonje took the contested final shot – a tightly contested 10-footer from the baseline – that missed the rim.
“We made the decision, we were coming down, we had done it before, put the ball in your best player’s hands and let him go make a play,” Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said. Tonje finished with 37 points.
Tonje hit a 3-pointer, made two free throws, and completed a traditional 3-point-play with under 2-minutes in the game to cut a 10-point deficit to 2. BYU never trailed in the game.
Richie Saunders had 25 points for BYU, which advances to the Sweet Sixteen next week.
