WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – To encourage Americans to eat healthier, the Food and Drug Administration and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the secretary of health and human services for the Trump administration, have revealed a new food “transparency” tool.
Last Thursday, Secretary Kennedy said in a press release about the tool that the “HHS is committed to radical transparency to give Americans authentic, informed consent about what they are eating. This new Chemical Contaminants Transparency Tool is a critical step for industry to Make America Healthy Again.”
The tool is “an online searchable database providing a consolidated list of contaminant levels (e.g., tolerances, action levels, and guidance levels) that are used to evaluate potential health risks of contaminants in human foods,” Kennedy continued.
The synthetic pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, or DDT, and Red 40 are some of the several items in question discussed in the database, for example. There is also discussion of other pesticides, like chlordane.
FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner also weighed in on the tool, saying, “Because many of the most nutritious foods can also contain contaminants, consumers should eat a variety of nutrient-dense foods across and within the main food groups of vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, and protein to help protect from possible exposure effects.”
The free tool can be accessed online at the link provided.
