WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – The White House is pushing back against news outlets claiming that classified materials were exposed when Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly added to a Signal group chat that discussed military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.
During Wednesday’s press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was critical of The Atlantic’s reporting, saying, “Here are the facts. The National Security Advisor has taken responsibility for this matter, and the National Security Council immediately said, alongside the White House Counsel’s Office, that they are looking into how a reporter’s number was inadvertently added to this messaging thread,” and “If this story proves anything, it proves that Democrats and their propagandists in the mainstream media know how to fabricate, orchestrate and disseminate a misinformation campaign quite well.”
“We have said all along that no classified material was sent on this messaging thread. There were no locations, no sources or methods revealed, and there were certainly no war plans discussed. The Atlantic has even admitted this themselves. Their release of these internal messages validates the truth which we have been saying all along,” Leavitt continued.
By using end-to-end encryption, Signal is a secure messaging service that ensures user privacy by preventing the service provider from accessing and reading private calls and chats made by users on its app. Also, Signal does not track or keep user data as other messaging applications do, and because its code is openly accessible, security professionals can check how it operates and make sure it stays secure.
President Donald Trump’s military leaders began military strikes against the Houthis on Saturday in response to the group’s attacks on Red Sea ships and sent a warning to Iran, the primary supporter of the Houthis, urging it to immediately cease its assistance to the terrorist organization. “America will hold you fully accountable and we won’t be nice about it!” he declared if Iran in any way endangered the United States.
