WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The former Town of Bergen Clerk has pled not guilty to stealing more than $100,000 in taxpayer money from the town checkbook.
Gloriann Doyle entered the plea in a Marathon County courtroom on Wednesday. Town leaders say she was forging checks to herself, then using the money to pay personal bills including her mortgage.
Leaders say the forgery started shortly after she was appointed Clerk in the summer of 2024. The 65-year-old is also accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Wisconsin Valley Art Association.
Doyle resigned her position as the Town’s clerk earlier this year, but not in time for her name to be removed from Tuesday’s ballot. Unofficial totals show she received 67 votes in Tuesday’s election, with 188 write-in votes and 160 “undervotes,” or people leaving the race blank.
Current interim Clerk Amy Veenendaal was running a write-in campaign. At this time, it’s unclear how many votes she received.
The case is scheduled for a calendar call on April 9th. Doyle is jailed on a $50,000 bond.
