WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny has high praise for Wausau Woodchucks Owner Mark MacDonald and the Northwoods League.
Diny participated in the unveiling of the Ignite logo last Wednesday and says he’s impressed with how the branding turned out. “I thought it was pretty cool and it will be a great addition.”
The Ignite joins four other established clubs for the second year of Northwoods League softball. They will share ownership and a front office team with the Wausau Woodchucks baseball club while also playing games at the newly turfed Athletic Park.
“We have to credit MacDonald and the Woodchucks for standing [this league] up. They’ll have the same number of teams that [baseball] did when they started, and now they’re up to 24,” said Diny.
As Mayor, he’s also glad to see the investments in Athletic Park, which he feels will make the facility more of a destination in the summer. “It doubles our use of that facility. It doubles the economic impact of Athletic Park [because] we will have roughly 60 evenings of baseball or softball. That is going to be huge.
“It’s an opportunity to put Wausau on the map,” added Diny.
The Wausau Ignite open their season on June 10th against the La Crosse Steam and will play 26 home games at Athletic Park through mid-August. Tickets for both the Woodchucks and Ignite are on sale now through the Northwoods League website and at the team office near Athletic Park.
