AUGUSTA, GA (WSAU) — It took one hole longer than he wanted, but Rory McIlroy achieved a career Grand Slam with that elusive Masters win on Sunday at Augusta National.
McIlroy missed a putt on 18, which would have given him the win, but he made up for it with a fantastic approach shot on the first playoff hole and made the birdie putt to beat Justin Rose by one stroke. It was his eleventh try at winning the Masters after a number of Sunday meltdowns in the past.
It was an up-and-down day for McIlroy as he coughed up a two-stroke lead on the first hole of the day and had two double-bogies in his round but made enough birdies to hold off challengers Rose, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, and Scottie Scheffler.
McIlroy finished Sunday at 1 over par and finished 11-under for the tournament. He joins Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods in the exclusive group that has won all four majors.
