The Marathon County Board of Supervisors could take a big step towards replacing the Highway Department complex on West Street in Wausau.
They’ll consider purchasing three plots along Old Highway 51 in Kronenwetter for the project at a cost of $795,000. Two of the parcels would be purchased from Wisconsin Public Service.
The purchase would bring 18 acres of land under county control. The ideal campus would be 24 acres, meaning leaders could consider purchasing some nearby land as well to make up the six-acre difference.
County leaders haven’t provided a timeline for the construction of a new highway complex, which could cost up to $40 million. The current site in Wausau dates back to the 1940s.
The proposal will be voted on at Tuesday’s regular meeting, which begins at 6:00 PM at the Marathon County Courthouse. Click here for Tuesday’s agenda.
