The story of a proposed set of duplexes on Wyatt Street in Wausau took a strange turn late last week when it was discovered that the city had unknowingly agreed to a development agreement for the land with a 17-year-old boy.
A report from Wausau Pilot and Review indicates that the person behind the development at 208, 210, and 214 is Gunther Nowak, who checked all the boxes to qualify for Community Development Block Grant funding. Though minors are generally not considered old enough to enter into enforceable contracts, such as a real estate development agreement.
Mayor Doug Diny had vetoed the proposal, saying he had concerns about the selling price and a perceived lack of marketing for the property. The parcels were listed as part of the city’s Property Disposition Program but weren’t widely advertised.
In a statement to Pilot and Review, Diny said he strongly encourages the council to sustain the veto to allow staff to investigate the oversight.
Alders are agendized to consider that veto as part of Tuesday’s council meeting. The agenda also includes approval of a temporary adjustment to lobby hours at City Hall from July 7th through August 29th and an update on the operations at the temporary Wausau and Marathon County homeless shelter.
