For the first time in months, the Wausau Ethics Board will revisit the complaint against Mayor Doug Diny regarding his handling of a locked, unsecured municipal dropbox left outside City Hall.
The board will meet at 3:00 PM to discuss “Status of proceedings and related developments regarding the pending complaint.” That includes the potential for further investigation and scheduling.
The matter was scheduled for a hearing in late April, which was called off when the Board decided they would not be able to get a complete picture of the events surrounding the complaint without cooperation from the City Clerk and Attorney, who said they would not participate due to the ongoing state investigation. It has also been suggested that additional witnesses could be interviewed or asked to provide statements.
At the time, the board voted to pause the matter for up to four months. Monday’s meeting will be the first since the decision.
Clerk Kaitlyn Bernarde intended to have the box installed and opened to collect completed absentee ballots ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election. The situation led to a week-long firestorm of back-and-forth statements, ultimately ending with the box being installed by the end of the following week.
Public comment is not part of Monday’s agenda, but the meeting is open to the public and will be streamed on the city’s YouTube page.
