The Wausau Ethics Board may firm up plans for a formal hearing on the complaint against Mayor Doug Diny on Tuesday.
The board is scheduled to meet at 4:00 PM with a four-item agenda, including discussion and possible action on scheduling a hearing on the complaint. They’ll also go over additional information received from possible witnesses and a possible agreement on a “stipulation of facts” regarding the complaint.
Of course, the complaint centers on Mayor Diny’s handling of a locked, unsecured municipal dropbox that City Clerk Kaitlyn Bernarde had intended to install and open to receive completed absentee ballots ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election.
Diny says he moved the box into his office for safekeeping, noting that anyone could have hauled it away. He says he also had other security concerns he wanted to clear up with the Clerk. His opponents say the move may have violated election laws, leading to the complaint.
Back in June, the Board tentatively scheduled a hearing for August 25th, but noted that the date needs to be flexible in case an extensive back-and-forth is required between all parties involved.
