WAUTOMA, WI (WSAU) — New information from the Wisconsin Department of Justice suggests that the suspect involved in a standoff in the Waushara County Town of Wautoma died after being hit by an officer’s gunshot.
Initial reports suggested that the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Timothy Lehman, may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. But further investigation from the Wisconsin Department of Justice- Division of Criminal Investigation shows that he was struck in an exchange of gunfire with responding officers.
The incident started as a domestic disturbance near State Highway 73 and County Road O. Lehman was outside when officers arrived, but he retreated into the home. Once inside, he fired at deputies, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Officers called in crisis negotiation teams to assist, and later reported hearing additional gunshots from the home. After more attempted communication, officers made their way into the house to find Lehman deceased.
Additionally, the Department of Justice has identified Waushara County Sheriff’s Deputy Alex Midthun as the officer who returned fire. He has been placed on administrative leave.
The investigation remains active, and all agencies are cooperating. DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by a DCI Crime Response Specialist, the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, and the Waushara County Medical Examiner’s Office.
All findings will be turned over to the Waushara County District Attorney, who will decide if the use of force was justified.
