WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — President Donald Trump has weighed in on Wisconsin’s open gubernatorial race, endorsing 7th Congressional District Congressman Tom Tiffany.
In a statement released by the Tiffany campaign Tuesday evening, Trump called the Republican a “Highly Respected America First Congressman, Tom Tiffany, is running to be the next Governor of the GREAT State of Wisconsin, a very special place to me in that we had a BIG Presidential Election Win just over one year ago, on November 5, 2024! I endorsed Tom for Congress early and strong, and he won, BIG. Likewise, he has always been at my side. A very successful Businessman, Family Farmer, and State Legislator, prior to becoming a distinguished United States Congressman, Tom is a Proven Leader who has dedicated his life to serving his Community.”
Trump added that Tiffany will support many aspects of his agenda, including the economy, energy independence, military investments, and border security. “Tom Tiffany has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next Governor of Wisconsin — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN,” said the President. The news was immediately met with criticism from one Democratic candidate, former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes. “Trump is endorsing Tom Tiffany because he’s been a rubber stamp for his agenda in Washington, giving tax cuts to the wealthiest while making life harder for families and farmers here at home. It’s time to reject Trump’s chaos and Tiffany’s Washington Way and get things done the Wisconsin Way. That’s what I’ll do as Governor,” said Barnes.
Tiffany is now the lone GOP candidate for Governor. A challenger, Josh Shoemann, bowed out of the race on Wednesday. At least seven Democrats have lined up to contend for the seat, including Tony Evers’ current Lieutenant Governor, Sarah Rodriguez. Democratic Legislators Kelda Roys and Francesca Hong have also declared, along with former WEDC Secretary Missy Hughes and former Administrative Secretary Joel Brennan. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has also tossed his name in the ring.
Evers announced last summer that he would not seek a third term as Governor, creating an open race.
Partisan Primaries will be held in August, with the General Election on November 3rd. The race is currently rated as a toss-up by most major prognosticators.
