MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Senator Patrick Testin is one of 16 Republicans who have signed on to a proposed state tax rebate.
The proposal would give direct payments of $500 to individual filers and $1,000 to married couples that file a joint return. Testin says the proposal would return some of the state’s multi-billion dollar surplus to the taxpayers.
“It’s no secret that Gov. Tony Evers’ irresponsible 400-year veto caused a large number of property tax bills to skyrocket this past December,” Sen. Testin said. “As a result, we know that many families across Wisconsin are struggling financially. We believe our proposal will go a long way toward reducing the tax burden on our residents. I look forward to chairing the hearing tomorrow and listening to the public’s thoughts on the legislation.”
The rebate would apply to anyone who filed a state tax return in 2024. The bill calls for the payments to be made by September 15th.
A hearing on the bill will be held on Thursday at 1:15 PM. Governor Evers has not commented on the bill, but has previously said he would like to find middle ground with the Republican-controlled legislature to lower property taxes.

During a listening session in Wausau, the Democrat challenged the Legislature to pass property tax relief before adjourning for the summer. “The fact of the matter is that we have some resources now, so we may as well get some things done. The Capitol is going to be open, if the Legislators want to work, we can continue working,” said Evers.
Projections have shown that Wisconsin’s state surplus is between $4 and $6 billion.
