STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) The Common Council voted 8-2 to approve conditional use permits for a Kwik Trip gas station and carwash at the corner of Hoover Road and County Road HH.
The proposal now moves forward, but it has sparked concern among residents of the neighboring Village Green neighborhood from the beginning. Many residents attended the meeting to voice their displeasure with the development.
The public comment period remained mostly civil; however residents continued to express concerns about potential groundwater contamination from the gas station. They also cited increased traffic, noise, and air pollutants as additional worries.
City council members who approved the permit said the conditional uses imposed on the development aim to mitigate these concerns as much as possible. However, some members who voted in favor of the development expressed discomfort, referencing the zoning change that allowed the proposal to be considered.
The land for the development is near the wellhead protection area for the Village of Whiting. The village board sent a letter to the City of Stevens Point expressing concern for their wellfield and requesting additional conditions.
Details about these additional conditions remain unclear, and we will follow up for further information.
