WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Two days of non-stop fundraising for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis are on tap for the team at WDEZ.
The annual Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radiothon begins Thursday at 6 AM and will cover 24 hours over two days. Brand Manager Bryan Scott says the event is not just a tradition that comes around once every year for him. “It’s about raising money for the research, saving kids’ lives, and trying to kill cancer.”
St. Jude’s research is shared globally, meaning the breakthroughs they develop are available to doctors in Central Wisconsin and around the world. Additionally, some local families have had children treated on the St. Jude campus in Memphis, TN. “Not every story ends well. We have personally been touched by numerous kids in our area. But the research that comes from what these kids go through [means] it’s not a wasted journey.”
The event brings long hours and a lot of behind-the-scenes work, but Scott says it’s worth it to support the cause. One regular donor does so because techniques and medications developed at St. Jude helped extend her father’s life by five to six years. It’s stories like that keep the team going. “Cancer sucks. It touches everybody, but that’s why we do what we do.”
Scott never sets a specific fundraising goal, though the Wausau event has raised more than $200,000 in previous years. For more information on donating, click here.
