WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The City of Wausau is going to cast a wide net in the search for the next permanent City Clerk after Kaitlyn Bernarde announced she would be leaving for a new opportunity after the April election.
Mayor Doug Diny says she leaves a staff that has seen little turnover in the last few years and will be ready to follow whoever their next leader may be. “Kaitlyn has run a pretty good ship so we need somebody who can jump in and pick up the ball.”
Diny says they’re looking for someone with good organizational skills and a passion for local elections. Someone with Wisconsin Municipal Clerk Certification is also preferred. If not, they must obtain certification within four years.
Diny adds that experience will be important. “We are the 16th largest city in the state and the largest in the 7th Congressional District, so it is important that the person has the capacity to [run] elections and be organized.”

Bernarde has served as the city’s Clerk since 2022. As of last Thursday, the city has received about 10 applications. Diny says the job will be considered vacant until filled.
The job has been posted to the city’s own job board and various state job boards, including the League of Wisconsin Municipalities and the state Clerk’s Association.
