WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — WAOW TV Meteorologist Justin Loew has confirmed that multiple weather records were set over the last two days.
He joined the WSAU Wisconsin Morning News with guest-host Mike Leischner on Tuesday to run down the list:
- Single-day snowfall record for March 15th: 23.4 inches (Previous: six inches, 1959)
- Single-day snowfall record for March 16th: 5.9 inches (Previous: five inches, 1917)
- Biggest snowstorm event: 30 inches (Previous: 22.1 inches, March 1959)
- Monthly snowfall, March: 37.8 inches (Previous: 36.2 inches, March 1956)
Loew says the last total could climb higher with a light snowfall forecast for Tuesday evening.
When asked if we should be concerned about severe flooding when the snow melts, Loew said colder temps and stronger sunlight should keep everything manageable. He recalled one blizzard in April of 2018 that left significant snowfall between the 13th and the 16th before temperatures reached the 60s and 70s four days later. “That was 20 inches of snow, and it was all gone. But in April, the sun is a lot stronger.
“It’s not going to be as fast as other years. I think it’s going to take seven or eight days to [start] melting this,” added Loew.
As for how Wausau ended up bearing the brunt of the storm, he says it was just our turn. “It was just the track of the storm. You can get a band of heavy rain or heavy snow with any particular storm system, and certain areas are just going to get hit. There’s no real rhyme or reason as to why Wausau got hit.”
