WAUTOMA, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A former Plainfield fire chief is facing felony charges, as state investigators allege he stole more than $100,000 from the village over nearly two years.
Jeffrey M. Kessenich, 29, faces three counts of theft in a business setting.
According to the criminal complaint, Kessenich took $112,157 from the Village of Plainfield by making unauthorized purchases and issuing unauthorized reimbursements to himself, moving money between different fire department accounts to cover up the activity.
The court records show the theft started in December 2023 and continued through September 2025.
Court records show Kessenich was arrested on Friday and is now free on a $10,000 cash bond. He’s scheduled for an initial appearance in Waushara County court on April 2nd.
