MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — Milwaukee’s offense backed up a strong start from Jacob Misiorowski in a 14-2 opening day victory at American Family Field.
Misiorowski, making his first-ever Opening Day start, went five innings and allowed just two hits and one earned run- a first-inning home run from Chase Meidroth. But the leadoff shot did little to bother Milwaukee’s former second-round draft pick, who would strike out the next three batters to get out of the inning. He finished with an Opening Day club record 11 punch-outs, topping a mark set by Ben Sheets’ 8 Ks on Opening Day 2002 and matched by Freddy Peralta twice.
Brice Turang, Christian Yelich, Jake Bauers, and Joey Ortiz each recorded two hits. Sal Frelick went 1-3 with a two-run home run in the 5th.
One of Bauers’ hits was a three-run home run in the 7th. William Contreras added a three-run double in the second.
A quartet of relievers, including DL Hall and Jake Woodford, closed the game out.
The teams will take Friday off before resuming the series on Saturday evening. Coverage begins at 5:35 on WSAU.
