WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — After Governor Tony Evers vetoed a pair of bills that would have created exemptions for state tax on overtime pay and tips, Republican Candidate Tom Tiffany says reviving the proposals would be an early priority if he’s elected.
“Whether it’s a bill right away in January or it’s done in the budget, I hope that we can do this,” Tiffany told WSAU News on Monday. “[The] state government has plenty of money, and it’s time to give some of that money back to the people that have earned it.”
In his veto message, Evers noted that the proposal wouldn’t apply to salaried workers. Tiffany says he doesn’t buy that. “He has done that with income taxes in other ways in the past, saying ‘I’m only going to give certain tax brackets [a tax cut]. So why would he not do it in this situation?
“He was looking for any reason to veto this bill and that’s the best he could come up it,” added Tiffany.
Evers’ veto came two days after Tiffany held a campaign event in Wausau supporting the measures. He also doubled down on his promise to eliminate the so-called 400-year veto involving per-student funding for public schools, saying affordability remains top-of-mind for many when looking for a new home. “If we are going to make life affordable for Wisconsinites, it starts with home ownership. Seniors want to be able to stay in their homes. Young people [consider], ‘can I afford the property tax?’ when they go to buy a home. With a 400-year property tax increase, for some, the answer is no.
“Think about it, our country is 250 years old. This property tax increase goes far beyond the life of our country, going back to 1776,” added Evers.
Tiffany is the lone Republican in the race and has President Trump’s endorsement. A crowded field of Democrats will compete in an August primary for their party’s nomination. That list includes former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, currently LG Sarah Rodriguez, and two current state Legislators- Francesca Hong and Kelda Roys.
