STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Statewide tornado drills are scheduled for next Thursday, April 16th.
Sirens will activate in participating communities at 1:45 PM and 6:45 PM, allowing residents to practice their tornado action plans at home and work. “These exercises promote and encourage everyone in Wisconsin to be ready for possible tornadoes and severe weather,” said Portage County Sheriff Mike Lucas in a press release.
If a threat of severe weather materializes, the date may be adjusted. If that threat lasts all week, the drill will be canceled.
Ideal tornado shelters include basements, ground-floor interior rooms of a building, or specially constructed safe rooms designed to withstand high winds and falling debris. Avoid exterior windows and doors whenever possible.
“Springtime is a very active time of the year for tornadoes in the United States, putting many people at risk. Preparing for such an occurrence is critical,” added Lucas.
