CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Here is something to remember about radicalized liberals, unreformed socialists, and communists. When it doesn’t suit them, they are opposed to law and order.
Consider what’s happening at the intersection of Williamson and South Baldwin streets in Madison. It’s the intersection where Corey Ruiz was shot and killed by police last month.
The night after the shooting, the street remained closed. The area was the scene of a vigil and a makeshift memorial. 12 days later – as of this morning – those streets are still shut down. It’s now informally known as the Corey Ruiz Autonomous Zone; a ‘no go’ area for police.
Demonstrators have put up barricades – they’ve moved dumpers into the road and have tied plastic garbage cans together. There’s now a large tent encampment there. City busses have been re-routed. Protesters control access to the block. A reporter was assaulted for trying to film in the autonomous zone; she was told she was being “disrespectful.”
There are businesses in the area. One has reopened to sell food and bottled water to the demonstrators. But, if that store is shoplifted or if someone raids the cash register, it’s understood that the police won’t be coming. Other stores are already shut down. Delivery trucks can’t get in or out.
Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway says she has public safety concerns. She called for the activists to disperse last weekend. They haven’t. Some have said they intend to hold the ground for months, if not longer. Would the mayor dare send in the hated Madison Police to reclaim the area?
Sit back and watch what happens. This is a liberal versus liberal situation. The conclusion will be this: law and order, only when it suits our goals. And other times, public order, elected officials, and sworn officers be damned.
