WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny says he hears the calls for immediate action on the contaminated soil at 1300 Cleveland Avenue, but continues to ask residents for patience while a redevelopment plan is worked out.
Diny says the city is working with the Department of Natural Resources to find a developer that will take on the project. “Then we can do the cleanup and closeout,” said Diny. “That’s one piece of it.”
But if the process will take years, he says the city could look for a different path forward. Either way, he says the city has committed to clean up the site, something that you couldn’t say a few years ago. He also emphasizes that the site will not go back to an industrial use. “I think that’s important for residents to hear. Non-industrial use means non-industrial. Whether it’s one of those items that [the residents] prioritized [or something else], it will be non-industrial.”
A survey of residents showed many would like to see the land converted into an outdoor recreation space or a community/senior center.
Discussion on the site had been scheduled for last Tuesday’s Economic Development Committee meeting, but that was canceled at the last minute. A future meeting date hasn’t been set.
