CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – You ask, where was God 25 years ago on September 11th? Why did he allow such an evil thing to happen?
People ask, did God, just for a moment, lift his hand of devine protection from our nation? In some ways, have we become so secular, so decadent, so sinful a society, that God allowed it? No, I don’t think so.
Scripture tells us that we live under grace, not under law. If we all “got what we deserve,” who could stand under His holy justice?
No, God was there on 9-11. He was there is the first responders who got some, but not all, of the people out of the Twin Towers after the attack. He was there in the train engineer who saved the lives of his passengers by speeding past the World Trade Center station and back across the Hudson River before the buildings collapsed. He was there on Flight 93 when brave passengers tried to re-take control of the airplane – the murderous gang intended to crash it into the White House. He was there in the thousands of people who rushed to Ground Zero to search for human remains; even small fragments of the bodies that they found allowed loved ones to have closure and to hold dignified funerals. He was there in the conscience of tens of thousands of Americans, some of whom joined the military in response to the attacks, others donated blood or made commitments to volunteerism, some went to church that Sunday for the first time in years and rededicated themselves to Him.
No, God did not take the day off on September 11, 2001. He was where he always is, guiding the life of this nation of freedom and liberty.
The horrible acts of 9-11 are not things that God allowed to happen. They are the works of Satan. God allows us freedom of choice, and on that day godless men plotted against us. And 25 years later, God gives each of us the freedom to choose. 25 years later, it’s still not too late for the events of that day to shape our lives. How will you respond?
