WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — For those curious about how a Beechcraft K-35 was removed from Lake Wausau after a crash-landing earlier this month, check the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office Facebook Page.
The department has released a two-minute video showing the process, starting with divers inspecting the craft and bringing it to the surface with inflatables. From there, the plane was towed to shore and lifted from the water by crews from Jerry’s Towing.
“This was an unusual call, but many of the skills used during the recovery are skills our Dive Team trains on throughout the year,” officers said. “The team is equipped for underwater search and recovery, evidence recovery and documentation, ROV operations, underwater rigging, lift bag operations, and other situations that require divers to work in difficult underwater conditions.”

The plane crashed into the lake as it was approaching the Downtown Wausau airport on Saturday, September 12th, carrying two people. On board were Congressman Tom Tiffany, the Republican candidate for Governor, and Pilot Lenny Boltz. Both escaped the crash with minor injuries.
Federal officials are investigating the crash, which could take 12-24 months. Tiffany says they had little warning before the crash, but credits Boltz with having enough wherewithal to bring up the landing gear before they hit the water, preventing further trouble.
