CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Halloween is tomorrow. So let’s spend a moment on whether Christians should partake. I’m certain not everyone will agree.
On Halloween, my children and I are not worshiping Satan. My children are worshiping Hershey bars and Peanut Butter cups. So I have no problem with my kids dressing up and collecting candy. My kids are too old for trick-or-treating these days. The last time they dressed up they were a cowboy and an owl; not as the devil or even a ghost.
Is Halloween my all-time favorite holiday? No, not even close. I much prefer Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving, which all have religious meanings to me.
Am I worshiping darkness on Halloween? Absolutely not.
There is something that disturbs me on Halloween. The number of houses that put out decorations for Halloween; graveyards, skeletons, monsters, etc. is growing. It’s at least as many as the homes who put up Christmas decorations. So I would ask, why is the holiday of darkness trending upward and the holiday of light and goodness is trending downward?
I still see Halloween as harmless fun, but with a word of caution. I would encourage you to examine what exactly you are celebrating.
