CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – If you’re a lifelong democrat, something strange has happened. On this Election Day, if you don’t gladly accept the far-left, socialist, craziness within your party – you’re a disloyal outsider. That’s ridiculous.
Consider Michigan. Congresswoman Haley Stevens objects to a crazy campaign commercial blaming Israel for the high cost of groceries in the United States. The premise itself is stupid. It’s another example of the false narrative of the blood libel that Jews secretly control the world. Her party’s Senate candidate Abdul El Sayed half-heartedly disavows the commercial. And Democrat Stevens publicly announces that she’s voting for republican Mike Rogers.
For her disloyalty to the socialist far-left wing of her party she’ll be kicked out. She’ll lose access to the party’s fundraising and campaign support; she won’t be allowed to caucus with democrats. The message is clear. Toe the line, even for our most radical candidates, or you’re out.
Teamsters Union President Sean O’Brien is now a resident of Florida. He announced yesterday that he’s supporting Republican Ashley Moody for Senate. Angie Dixon, the democrat in the Florida race , is an out-of-the-mainstream lefty. In the past, she would have automatically received support from labor. Not this time. And the Teamsters take heat for it. The union’s position is that we back candidates who back working men and women, not an impossible radical agenda.
A challenge for many democrats is that to pass the party’s loyalty test, you have to publicly support some nonsensical candidates. And if you don’t, you’re on the outs.
What a strange Election Day this is.
