CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) Starting in January, it will be David Crowley’s Wisconsin. Conservatives like you are me are just living in it.
With majorities in the state assembly and the state senate, Republicans are powerless to stop anything. There’s no filibuster. Anything that passes the legislature goes straight to the governor’s desk.
Crowley promised to make Wisconsin more affordable. Unfortunately, he doesn’t hold any levers of power to do that. He’s suggested one of his first bills is to eliminate the minimum mark-up law. That’s supposed to prevent gas stations from price gouging. The law is outdated, but it has very little to do with the price and the pumps. Gas station owners pay the spot price for fuel; it’s simple supply and demand. Of course David Crowley could use his legislative majority to suspend Wisconsin’s 33-cents a gallon gas tax. But, I assure you, no taxes will be going down under our new governor.
Crowley’s next bill will be to legalize abortion in Wisconsin. Baby killing is a high priority.
His third bill will be to expand BadgerCare. We will use temporary money from Washington to get more people onto taxpayer funded health insurance. The federal money is temporary. The eligibility expansion is permanent. Eventually Wisconsin taxpayers will make up the difference.
Conservatives should prepare themselves for the great rollback. Act 10 will be undone. Recreational marijuana will be allowed. None of that $3-billion surplus is going back to the taxpayers. Wisconsin will become a sanctuary state.
The only saving grace – and it’s a small one – is that if things go sideways, it’s all the Democrats’ fault. Republicans don’t have the power to do or to stop anything.
Elections have consequences.
