MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — Flights are grounded at the 115th Fighter Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard in Madison after an F-16 fighter jet went down in Delta County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on Tuesday night, killing the pilot.
That pilot was identified Friday as 37-year-old Air Force Capt. Durwood “Hawk” Jones, 37, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, who is survived by his wife and two children.
Capt. Jones joined the Air National Guard in 2011 and graduated from F-16 basic qualification training in 2015, according to a press release.
Before joining the military, Capt Jones graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in mathematics in 2005.
Wing Commander Bart Van Roo calls it a tragedy and promises a full investigation, which will focus on training, pre-flight briefings, aircraft maintenance and more in determining the cause of the accident. The pilot was found dead Thursday.
