WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A 22-year-old man was injured during a police chase early Sunday morning.
Wausau Police attempted to stop the man for speeding near Sturgeon Eddy Road and Grand Avenue at around 1:20 AM. Instead of pulling over, the driver sped off and a short pursuit ensued.
The driver ultimately crashed near Memorial Park, about a half-mile from where officers had tried to initiate the stop. His vehicle caught fire, which police officers were able to put out with equipment in their patrol cars. The driver sustained “significant” injuries in the crash and required extraction by firefighters.
He was taken to a Wausau-area hospital for treatment. An update on his condition has not been made available.
Due to the nature of the accident, the Wausau Police Department has turned the investigation over to the Wisconsin State Patrol. The driver’s identity has not been released, and it remains unclear if criminal charges will be filed in the case.
