Every five years the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are looked at to see if anything needs to be revised and then they’re re-released. The U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HSS) recently released the new guidelines for 2020-2025 and they confirm the importance of dairy in our diet.
Here are a few of the highlights from the latest guidelines:
- Introducing dairy into a child’s diet after six months old can help lower the risk of asthma.
- Including low-fat and fat-free dairy in your diet is associated with positive outcomes from issues like cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer.
- The guidelines say Americans should consume three servings of dairy each day.
- Children ages 12-23 months old should be given higher fat dairy. (ex: whole milk)
From day one, dairy products play an important role in our diets. That statement remains true once again thanks to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. You can see the complete 2020-2025 guidelines here.
