WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A local pond hockey tournament in Central Wisconsin has been canceled for this winter.
In a Facebook post on January 14th organizers of the Wisconsin Pond Hockey Classic Tournament announced they’ve made the decision to cancel the tournament for 2021. Organizers say the decision to cancel was made after they were informed by the local tourism commission that they would not partner with the group for this year’s tournament due to COVID-19 concerns.
Teams that already registered for the 2021 tournament will receive a refund of their registration fee. Tournament organizers are already beginning to plan the 2022 tournament with the hope to return to the annual tradition.
The Wisconsin Pond Hockey Classic is one of two pond hockey tournaments to be canceled for 2021. USA Hockey announced last week that they were canceling the Labatt Pond Hockey National Championships in Eagle River. USA Hockey plans to bring back the tournament in Mid-February 2022.
