WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Another Central Wisconsin county has a confirmed case of CWD.
According to a press release from the DNR a wild deer tested positive for chronic wasting disease in the Town of Port Edwards in Wood County. The deer was found in an area of the county that is within ten miles of both Adams and Juneau counties. The CWD-positive deer was a buck harvested during the 2020 gun deer season and tested by the DNR’s disease surveillance efforts.
With the positive deer, Wood, Juneau, and Adams counties will be placed under baiting and feeding bans. State law requires that the DNR enact a ban on the baiting and feeding of deer in counties or portions of counties within a 10-mile radius of a deer that tests positive for CWD. Wood County will be placed under a 3-year ban while Juneau and Adams counties will be under a 2-year baiting and feeding ban.
The DNR will continue surveillance near the location where the CWD-positive deer was found.
Wisconsin started to watch for CWD in 1999. The nervous system disease is fatal for deer, elk, moose, and caribou. To date, there haven’t been any cases of CWD being transferred to humans.
