WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The process to change library systems for the Marathon County Public Library is going to take a little bit longer.
At Thursday’s meeting of the Marathon County Extension, Education, and Economic Development Committee the committee was agendized to set a date for a public hearing. The public hearing would be for the Marathon County Public Library Board’s Recommendation to move library systems to the South Central Library System.
Committee Chair and District 20 Supervisor Sara Guild said she had received an email request from the Library Board in the morning to postpone setting a date for the public hearing. “They would like to continue conversations at the Library Board level to gather additional information before a public hearing is scheduled.”
Guild did not have details about what type of information the Library Board would be gathering regarding the request to change library systems. But she did mention the public hearing issue could come before the Committee again.
“Once the Library Board garners whatever information they are looking for, then at that time it could come back to this committee.”
The Marathon County Public Library is currently a member of the Wisconsin Valley Library System along with Clark, Taylor, Lincoln, Langlade, Oneida, and Forest Counties. The South Central Library System is headquartered in Madison and is currently comprised of Wood, Portage, Adams, Sauk, Columbia, Dane, and Green Counties.
The library system change has been in the works for about three years according to Library Director Ralph Illick. He says the move would be more cost-effective for Marathon County, his staff will get the support they need that he feels WVLS can’t give them, and by joining a library system with more libraries similar in size to MCPL.
