MADISON, WI (WRN) – Governor Tony Evers ended his state budget address last night, with a challenge to legislators.
“Our opportunity to bounce back from this crisis calls for you to summon the will to get this done. There’s no time for false promises of hope and prosperity, with empty words that you know full well won’t match your actions. You can disagree with me if you want, but don’t punish the people we serve so you can settle a score no one but you is keeping.”
Evers proposed a 91 billion dollar two-year spending plan, which includes raising one billion dollars in taxes, and a 1-point-6 billion dollar increase in funding for K-12 schools.
But he stunned lawmakers by not only proposing new tax increases, but also the elimination of Act 10 and Wisconsin’s Right to Work law.
Evers’ proposal now goes to the legislature’s Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee.
Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said the governor’s budget shows Governor Evers isn’t serious about governing and is only serious about politics.
