We continue our look and listen to the music of 50 years ago…after last night’s Grammy’s, get down with this…
1971 was a year that saw debut albums from several groups that would go on to greater fame later. One of those was a band that came from Houston and became known as That Little Ole Band From Tejas…ZZ Top.
Their debut record was called
Which was because guitarist Billy Gibbons said they hoped to have a second chance at some point. The LP was made up of the gutbucket Texas blues that the members had listened to on Wolfman Jack’s crazy Mexican radio stations that could be heard for thousands of miles. The thing that made this band different from the hundreds of other Texas hopefuls was the solid bottom laid down by bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard and the blues guitar mastery of a young Billy Gibbons..
Gibbons had already had some success around Houston in a psychedelic blues rock band called Moving Sidewalks that had actually opened for Hendrix, the Doors and other bands that came through southeast Texas.
After that band broke up he hooked up with Hill and Beard and started rocking a sound that would eventually bring Texas Blues to the masses
The release of the album in January of 1971 saw a band that knew what it was and what it wanted…..
The only single from the Lp was this which featured Gibbons on some tasty pedal steel…
It also started some of the double entendres that the band became known for in the 80’s
The album was re-mixed in 1987 to sound “more modern” but most fans say the re-mix is terrible and prefer the original mix…on vinyl if you can find it.
Here is the entire LP…enjoy!
