MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The state Assembly has passed a measure that would allow restaurants, bars, and some entertainment venues to halt the collection of sales taxes for three months.
The Summer Sales Tax Holiday proposal, also known as Assembly Bill 242, would run from June 1st through August 31st. During that time an estimated 11,000 businesses statewide would not collect sales taxes on top of what customers are already spending in their establishments.
Other businesses that would benefit include amusement parks, arcades, and both indoor and drive-in movie theaters.
Representative Patrick Snyder of Schofield authored the bill and says as more people get vaccinated it would give them more incentive to support those who were hit hardest by COVID-19 and related shutdowns.
It’s unclear how much support the bill has in the State Senate, or if Governor Evers would sign it. The Democratic Governor and Republican-controlled legislature have been at odds over control of the state’s share of the American Recovery Act funding and the upcoming state budget.
