MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents is set to meet on Wednesday in a closed session to “consider an employment agreement and an additional compensation agreement” for the next UW Madison Director of Athletics.
It’s the first indication that we could soon know who will replace Barry Alvarez at the top of the state’s flagship collegiate athletics program. Alvarez has served as football coach and AD at the school since the 1990’s- including one year where he held down both jobs. He announced his resignation in April, saying he had wanted to step away sooner but stayed on to help guide the Athletics Department through the COVID-19 pandemic and its financial and logistical impact on the school.
Consideration of the employment agreement with the unnamed candidate is the only item on Wednesday’s agenda. The meeting is set to begin at 9 AM, and the agenda does not give any indication that an announcement will be made before adjournment.
A list of candidates for the job has not been made public. There was speculation from the onset that the successor to Alvarez was already on the UW Athletic Administration staff, but Chancellor Rebecca Blank made it clear that she wanted to consider outside candidates for the position as well.
Among those rumored to be frontrunners for the job included current UW Deputy AD Chris McIntosh and Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard. Pollard graduated from UW Oshkosh and served in various capacities in the UW Madison Athletic Office before being named ISU AD over 15 years ago.
