RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Initial reports indicate that speed and alcohol may have been factors in an ATV crash that killed Oneida County Sheriff’s Sergeant Anton “Archie” Keelin over the Memorial Day weekend.
WAOW TV reports that reduced visibility due to dust kicked up from the riders ahead of him may have also contributed to the accident, according to DNR investigators.
Keelin was riding as part of a group in Iron County last weekend when his ATV struck an object in the trail. He was ejected from the machine and struck a tree.
Those in his group attempted life-saving measures before he was rushed to a hospital in nearby Ironwood, Michigan where he died.
Full toxicology reports will not be completed for another month or two. The investigation into the incident remains open.
