TOWN OF PINE RIVER, WI (WSAU) — An unidentified couple from the Town of Pine River has lost thousands trying to buy a pontoon off Craigslist.
Officers say the couple sent the seller $13,000 only to never hear back from them again. They notified the Sheriff’s office and turned over all previous communications, where officers noticed numerous red flags.
The seller refused to meet in person to conduct the transaction or let the buyers inspect the boat, citing the COVID-19 pandemic as a reason why. Additionally, the seller refused to conduct business via phone or any other means besides email.
The boat was said to be 14 years old but in “prestine” condition with no watermarks or any other known flaws.
Messages from the supposed seller also contained numerous spelling and grammatical errors even though they were said to be from a professional broker.
The investigation has been turned over to the FBI, though it’s highly unlikely the couple will ever get their money back.
