To finish up June Dairy Month, Fond du Lac County’s doing things a little bit different by hosting the annual dairy breakfast at LaClare Family Creamery, a goat dairy right outside of Chilton in Malone. The big event goes from 8 am to noon on Sunday, June 27th.
The farm was established by Larry and Clara Hedrich in the 70s with two goats, about a dozen chickens, and a couple of peacocks, which then turned into what it is today. We spoke with one of the partners in the dairy, Jim Ostrom who wanted to thank the organizers of the breakfast in Fond du Lac County for being open to hosting the event at a goat dairy. “This is an opportunity to really show something that’s generally unique in the state of Wisconsin,” Ostrom said.
He explains that the area LaClare is positioned in is one of the largest goat dairy spots in the nation. “It started out with the Hedrich’s starting LaClare, and it built an interest in the area,” Ostrom explained. “That particular radius is likely to be the most populated area in the United States, if not North America (for goat dairies).”
Ostrom talked about how hosting dairy events like this is a great chance for the farming community to share their story. “We in agriculture have a responsibility of, no matter what our station is or what our role is in the industry, to communicate with our urban friends and our rural neighbors about what we do and why we do it.” He went on to explain how 30 years ago there were more people involved in ag, but things have drastically changed. That’s why it’s our duty to share what we know about the industry with those who aren’t as familiar with it.
The Fond du Lac County Breakfast on the Farm kicks off this Sunday, June 27th at 8 am and goes until noon.
