WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — It took less than 5 minutes for supervisors to agree on supporting a broadband grant application.
A special meeting of the Marathon County Board was held Monday evening to vote on a single item before its Tuesday afternoon deadline. The item before the board was to support a broadband grant application from Charter Communications to the state’s Public Safety Commission. The item was up for discussion during the board’s educational meeting last Thursday but could not be voted on due to an agendizing error.
The request from Charter Communication did not include a financial commitment from the county. The request submitted by Celeste Flynn, Charter’s Director of Government Affairs, asks the county for a letter of support for the application, letters from residents and businesses in the County supporting the expansion of broadband, and confirmation that Marathon County is a “Broadband Forward” County.
The County Board voted unanimously to approve the request from Charter to support their Public Safety Commission broadband grant application. Thursday evening the board approved three other PSC grant application requests from Bug Tussle Wireless, Cirrinity, and Country Wireless.
The applications are due to the state commission by Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The board will also be discussing a separate broadband grant application from Charter to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at their Tuesday voting meeting.
