WAUSAU, WI – (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS-93.9 FM THE GAME) Both D.C. Everest and Chippewa Falls were impressive winners on opening night. The box scores might suggest that Chi Hi’s opener was more of a romp than Everest’s.
Maybe. Maybe not.
Everest put up 42 points against Green Bay-Preble. It could have been more. The Evergreens had their starters out of the game for the entire 4th quarter. Everest decided against punching the ball in for a 7th touchdown, instead taking a knee in the closing moments of the game.
Chippewa Falls shut out Holmen, 40-0, to start their season. Holmen may have been an easier opponent for Chi-Hi than Preble was for Everest. Holman usually plays winning football, but they are a division two school that normally builds its record against smaller schools in the western part of the state.
Both Chi-Hi and Everest had similar experiences in week one. Both racked up most of their yardage on the ground, both passing games were limited but effective. Both defenses won the line of scrimmage.
The only difference was the Everest’s defense gave up two big plays, covering 130 yards (a long pass over the middle with a coverage mistake in the 1st half, and a long touchdown run in the second half that came against Everest’s back-ups.) The biggest difference between the two teams was that Everest committed 11 penalties; Chippewa Falls played a cleaner game.
While Chippewa Falls may be the toughest opponent on Everest’s schedule, these teams may be about even. The fundamentals will determine the winner: who makes the fewest mistakes, limiting turnovers, being opportunistic.
