HILES, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — Three people were on board a small airplane that crashed in rural Forest County on Tuesday after it took off from the Rhinelander-Oneida County airport.
Airport Director Matthew Leitner told WXPR Radio in Rhinelander that the aircraft left his facility at around 8:45 AM. Shortly after 9:30, the airport received word that air traffic controllers in Minneapolis were searching for a missing aircraft in the area.
The crash occurred near Butternut lake, located between Hiles and Three Lakes. The Federal Aviation Administration released the following statement on the situation:
“A twin-engine Rockwell 690B crashed into a swamp 12 miles east of Eagle River Airport at 11:50 a.m. local time today in Rhinelander, Wis. Three people were aboard. The FAA will release the tail number of the aircraft after investigators verify it at the accident site. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. Neither agency identifies people involved in aircraft accidents.”
A National Transportation Safety Board Investigator will likely arrive at the scene on Wednesday.
