ST. LOUIS, MO (WSAU) — The Brewers will go into October without one of their star relief pitchers.
The team announced that Devin Williams has been placed on the 10-Day IL after fracturing a bone in his pitching hand in while celebrating the team’s NL Central title earlier this week. The break will require surgery, and will likely sideline Williams for the remainder of the year.
Williams says the injury occurred when he punched a wall in frustration after having too many drinks.
“I’m pretty upset with myself. There is no one to blame but me. I feel like I’ve let the team down, the coaching staff, our fans. I know how big of a role I play on this team,” Williams told the media. “If I could take it back I would.”
Team President David Stearns says there is an “outside chance” Williams could be on Milwaukee’s roster if they make the World Series. However, he will not be available for the NLDS or NLCS.
The team did not know the extent of the injury until Tuesday night. According to Stearns, Williams tried to throw before Tuesday’s game but was experiencing discomfort in his pitching hand. The Brewers took him for an X-Ray during the game.
Williams and Stearns announced the injury on Wednesday in St. Louis.
