WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Marathon County Library Trustees will conduct closed-session interviews Monday for the Library’s vacant director position.
According to a Library Board Agenda posted for Monday, they’ll start at 10:45 AM by going into a closed session to conduct interviews. They’re then scheduled to break at around 1 PM for the regular board meeting, then go back into closed session to conduct interviews again.
Board of Trustees Chair Sharon Hunter confirmed to WSAU news that they will interview two candidates on Monday, bringing the total number of interviews for the position to four. Two other canddiates were interviewed last week.
Hunter adds that the board intends to narrow that field of candidates down to one top candidate, who will then come to Wausau for a second interview in November. An announcement on the new director could happen as soon as late November.
The position has been vacant since May when Ralph Illick resigned amid an investigation into worlplace culture. That lead to the resignation of one other employee- Business Manager Tom O’Neill, and the termination of Matthew Derpinghaus.
Derpinghaus intitally blew the whistle on the situation by writing a letter to the Library Trustees detailing allegations of a toxic and hostile work environment including instances of bullying, harassment, coercion, and threats of termination. While an investigation by an outside firm corrobrated those stories, they also lead to his termination when it was discovered that he had contributed to the negative work environment by making inapprorpraite comments to female employees without being diciplined.
