WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — It’s New Year’s Eve and you should be planning your night out now before you head out to your destination.
Marathon County Tavern League vice president Nancy Prahl says you should be coming prepared for your New Year’s Eve with a plan for where you’re going out to celebrate, and stick to it. She says you should be using designated drivers, and that there is the option to use the Safe Ride Home program through the Tavern League. She says it’s a great way to keep yourself and your wallet safe. “It saves lives, it saves a lot of money for patrons who might possibly get picked up for DWI.”
The program started as a partnership between Central Beer and the Tavern League in 1993, and has become the model for Safe Ride programs across the country. Prahl says this is a program that the Tavern League fully supports across the state. “I believe in the last year, we have probably spent $60,000 on Safe Rides for Marathon County.”
Prahl reminds residents that the Safe Ride Home is exactly what it says. It’s not a taxi service to get around. “The Safe Ride Home will not take you to another bar, it’s going to take you home.” She says you should make arrangements to pick up your car from the tavern you’re leaving and make sure you’re prepared to leave that vehicle overnight.
