MILWAUKEE, Wi (WSAU) — The Milwaukee Brewers haven’t had a Cy Young Award winner since 1982 when Pete Vukovich helped the team earn a World Series spot. That could change this year.
Corbin Burnes was announced as one of three finalists for the award on Monday. He’s joined by Max Scherzer of the Dodgers and Philadelphia’s Zach Wheeler.
Being a finalist means that Burnes was one of the three top vote getters by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He is the first Brewer to finish this high in the voting since Teddy Higuera who finished second in 1986.
Burnes was 11-5 over 28 starts this season. He had 234 strikeouts and only 34 walks through 167 innings. He held opponents to a .201 batting average.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell is also up for National League Manager of the Year. He is one of three finalists with Gabe Kapler of San Francisco and Mike Shildt who was fired by St. Louis after the season. No Brewer manager has ever won this award.
Both award winners will be announced next week.
