The New York Mets have offered their general manager post to former Los Angeles Angels GM Billy Eppler, The Athletic reported Monday.
Eppler, 46, was fired by the Angels at the end of the 2020 season after five years. Eppler hired Joe Maddon as manager, signed Mike Trout to a $426.5 million contract and brought in Shohei Ohtani.
However, the Angels did not have a winning record during Eppler’s tenure, going 332-376 over that stretch. The Angels also had three managers in those five seasons, going from Mike Scioscia to Brad Ausmus to Maddon.
The Angels hired Eppler from the New York Yankees in 2015, where he was GM Brian Cashman’s assistant GM. Eppler was with the Yankees for a decade.
In September it was announced that Eppler had joined agency William Morris Endeavor Sports as co-leader of its new baseball representation business.
The Mets parted ways with acting general manager Zack Scott earlier this month following a DUI arrest. Scott was hired as assistant GM in December 2020 and was promoted to the top position when then-GM Jared Porter was fired in January following a sexual misconduct scandal.
The Mets also fired manager Luis Rojas last month after two seasons.
