WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — The voters in the city of Wausau decided against all three referendums on the spring ballot.
The binding referendum questions seeking to create a garbage and recycling fee and a stormwater management fee were soundly defeated, meaning those two expenses will stay on the tax rolls and not be billed separately. Defeating the stormwater proposal also allows non-profit organizations to avoid paying their share of stormwater costs, since they are tax exempt.
The garbage and recycling question failed 4,960 to 1,820 or 73% to 26%. The stormwater proposal failed with 4,245 no votes and 2,485 yes votes, or 63% to 36%.
The mayor vs. administrator referendum results are not binding, and leaves the Wausau City Council with no clear direction because it was so close. Only 279 votes separated the yes and no columns. There were 3,248 yes votes or 47.9% and 3,527 no votes, or 52%.
